The Manhattan Transfer: uno de los grupos vocales más deliciosos y maravillosos

Se formaron en Nueva York en 1972, comenzando a actuar en clubs de jazz neoyorkinos, donde alcanzaron gran popularidad. Pero en realidad, The Manhattan Transfer aunan en su interior la calidad vocal de sus componentes, con el buen gusto en interpretaciones clásicas de jazz, soul, swing, samba o folk. Todo ello les ha permitido abarcar diversidad de audiencias, tanto en Estados Unidos, como en Europa, donde siempre han permanecido fieles a este cuarteto.

Al frente del grupo estuvo Tim Hauser, hasta su muerte el 16 de octubre del año 2014. Su maestría en el arte del vocalese, estilo que consiste en añadir letras a piezas instrumentales de jazz, les proporcionó el más alto grado de reconocimiento aspirando por su álbum Vocalese a 12 Grammys en 1985, todo un récord superado sólo por el Thriller de Michael Jackson. En su diverso océano musical nos podemos encontrar con temas como "Groovin'", "Birdland", "Chanson d'Amour", "Twilight Zone/Twilight Tone", "Spice Of Life" o "Soul Food To Go", de su álbum -premiado con un Grammy- Brasil, sin olvidarnos de su mayor éxito en España, "Speak Up Mambo", más conocido aquí como "Cuéntame Qué Te Pasó". Todo un boom por aquel entonces, donde deja claro su diversidad musical y su reinvindicación de no ser catalogados y ser simplemente The Manhattan Transfer, uno de los grupos vocales más deliciosos y maravillosos con los que han podido disfrutar mis oidos.

Incognito: catalizando energía

Si sumamos la magia de voces que rebosan calidad, la genialidad compositiva de Jean-Paul "Bluey" Maunick, y la fusión de sonidos jazz, soul, funk, disco o house, nos topamos de pleno con la elegancia de un grupo mítico de la escena Acid Jazz llamado Incognito. Y es que la formación liderada por Maunick, lleva varias décadas dando muestra de su originalidad y buen hacer. Con el atractivo de su sonido, y apoyado siempre por grandes vocalistas como Maysa, o Jocelyn Brown, nos ofrece una pócima con ingredientes medicinales extraidos por la inspiración de artistas como Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye o Kool & The Gang, que son capaces de catalizar la energía necesaria para sanar un alma necesitado de buena música.    

Así es Incognito, un grupo que se deja querer, y con sólo escuchar sus primeras notas, te invita a disfrutar a lo grande con su música. Energía que contagia positivismo, colorido en su sonido, y encanto en su melodía. Ese es el caso de canciones como "Pieces Of A Dream", una canción de principios de los años 90 que cuenta con la espectacularidad de la voz de Maysa Leak, una de las voces más maravillosas del planeta, y sin quedarse atrás la voz de Jocelyn Brown en "Always There". The Brand New Heavies: Never Stop

The Brand New Heavies son un grupo británico que son toda una referencia para entender el sonido acid-jazz. Fusionan con maestría el funk, jazz, soul, disco, hip hop y R&B, todo ello con instrumentaciones reales, creando pura música groove.

Melodía, ritmo, y con grandes vocalistas como N'Dea Davenport en este tema, "Never Stop", perteneciente a su disco debut para Estados Unidos del año 1992.

Al Jarreau: el adios de un hombre versátil y original

Triste la noticia de la desaparición de todo un maestro de la voz, Al Jarreau. Es y siempre será uno de mis cantantes predilectos con su virtuosa voz versátil y original.  Se desenvuelvía con soltura por la música y las décadas. Ha conseguido 7 Grammys en estilos tan diversos como el jazz, RnB, o el pop y en 4 décadas diferentes.

Los ochenta fueron su época dorada, con éxitos tanto en discos propios como en tv. Muchos recordaréis la famosa sintonía de la serie Luz de Luna (Moonlighting). Criticado por los más puristas del jazz por sus devaneos con la comercialidad, la realidad es que este virtuoso de la voz, nos ha deleitado con hermosas canciones como "All Or Nothing At All", "L Is For Ever", o "Mornin'".

Pero, aparte de las más conocidas, también podemos encontrar temas llenos del encanto y simpatía como, donde como siempre, conseguía unir eso tan dificil como es la originalidad, comercialidad, y calidad. Una auténtica delicia disfrutarlo en directo como en este concierto de 1984 en el Wembley Arena de Londres, Inglaterra.

Un 3x1 al alcance de todos los públicos de un hombre que hayá donde se encuentre siempre no envolverá  con su simpatía y pasión.

Santa Claus Está Viniendo a la Ciudad

Llegó un año más el periodo navideño y como suele ser habitual, las canciones especialmente concebidas para empaparnos de su espíritu. Éste es el caso de "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town", por un lado interpretada por uno de los artistas de corte jazz con más éxitos de los últimos años, Michael Bublé. Un hombre con una habilidad especial a la hora de interpretar y acompasar grandes melodías al son de su ritmo suave y acogedor. Para ello cuenta tambien con una voz como pocas para llevar a cabo ese cometido. Una voz que es capaz de seducir y cautivar por su maestría y control.

Por otro lado la misma canción en una de las voces más polifacéticas y versátiles del mundo latino, Luis Miguel retrocediendo unos añitos, concretamenmte a su álbum navideño del 2006 titulado Navidades. En ese disco y con su voz, nos regala "Santa Claus Llegó A La Ciudad" a ritmo de Big-Band. Grandes voces de la que me aprovecho para desear mis mejores deseos para el nuevo año 2017 que se nos echa encima.

Santa Claus está viniendo a la ciudad, y con ello seguro hará realidad los deseos de la mayoría de nosotros.

Norah Jones: talento y sensibilidad

Cantante, pianista, compositora, y dueña de un talento y sensibilidad especial que ha cautivado a medio mundo. Ella es Norah Jones, y sus comienzos fueron explorando sonidos jazz con gran maestría al piano, desembarcando posteriormente hacia un pop acústico que flictea con el soul o el country. Su disco debut "Come Away With Me" logró la friolera de 8 grammys gracias su particular y sensual forma de componer y transmitir. Canciones como "Sunrise" llenas de una delicadeza y sensibilidad capaces de estremecerte el alma y que ha sabido mantener a lo largo de sus cinco álbumes en estudio, y como no en su próxima publicación en pocas semanas titulado "Day Breaks" cuyo adelanto es "Carry On".

Katie Melua: Nine Million Bicycles

Nació tras el telón de acero, en Georgia, aunque a la edad de ocho años emigró a Irlanda del Norte. Siendo una adolescente ya logró premios en el Reino Unido, y es que la dulzura de la voz de Katie Melua, nos va envolviendo en una armonizada mezcla de sonidos jazz y blues dificil de resistirse. Lleva ya unos cuantos álbumes en el mercado y dentro de ellos canciones dignas de ser escuchadas, entre ellas "Nine Million Bicycles".

Una bella melodía que Katie, con su hermosa voz, nos transmite paz y calma placentera.

Louis Armstrong: What A Wonderful World

Todo un virtuoso de la corneta y la trompeta, Louis Armstrong era también un maestro en la improvisación, y una de las figuras más carismáticas e innovadoras de la historia del jazz y el más popular. Su forma de hacer música era sofisticada y novedosa, hasta el punto de que sobre sus estándares del jazz de Nueva Orleans y canciones populares del momento, han resistido perfectamente el paso del tiempo. Su toque único de trompeta, su improvisación melódica transformando temas, y su particular voz grave y rota, lograban elevar la música a un punto casi inalcanzable para un ser humano.

Fueron muchos los temas que lanzó al estrellato, pero quizás sea este el más conocido, "What A Wonderful World", letra, voz y música llenas de belleza y encanto.

Frank Sinatra: I've Got You Under My Skin

Camarero, actor, cantante..., pero sobre todo elegante y señorial. Así era Frank Sinatra, genuino en todo lo que se proponía.

Su control de la respiración al cantar, su precisión al vocalizar, su capacidad y facilidad para transmitir con su voz emociones y sensaciones..., era todo un conjunto de detalles que le auparon a ser considerado simple y llanamente como "La Voz". Todo un premio a una figura que ha interpretado de manera personal y única más de 1000 canciones. Entre ellas "I've Got You Under My Skin", escrita por el elegante y eterno compositor Cole Porter, y que define perfectamente la fusión entre canción y artista. Sin duda uno de los más grandes cantantes que ha habido y habrá.

Bobby Caldwell: Don't Lead Me On

Bobby Caldwell es un cantante que lleva más de 30 años en el mundo de la música fusionando el jazz, el soul y el pop, llegando a crear un sonido muy particular. Su voz, pese a ser blanco, está llena de soul, y junto a sus cualidades de multinstrumentista, hay que sumar sus dotes como compositor. Prueba de ello es esta maravillosa canción de su disco del 92 -Stuck on You- con la que disfruto cada vez que la escucho, "Don't Lead Me On".
